Nintendo has adopted March 10th as the day to celebrate its iconic shell-stomping plumber Mario, and with 2026 also being the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., we’re getting a lot of shiny new things, like the latest trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. But while the day may belong to his brother, this is the anniversary for the brothers, plural, so it’s only fair that at least someone remembered to give Luigi a moment to shine too.
That someone is Lego, who has decided that 2025’s Mario Day set—an oversized display model of Mario in his standard racer from Mario Kart—needed a sister set. Well, brother set: because it’s now Luigi in his own roadster getting the spotlight.

Clocking in at 2,234 pieces, the Luigi and Mach 8 set is very much in the vein of last year’s Mario. You’ve got a semi-posable Luigi, who can rotate his head, hands, and arms and be removed from the kart (although he’ll still be stuck in a seated position); you’ve got the Mach 8 itself, with rotating wheels and a display stand that can be tilted to depict the kart mid-corner-drift. This is all well and good, and just like last year’s Mario version, this looks pretty great for Mario Kart fans who aren’t too keen on Lego’s midi-scaled mishmash of buildable characters and the electronic Mario playsets of the rest of its Super Mario range. It just now comes in green!
But it’s missing one tiny thing that could’ve made a great set perfect: a set of alternate angry eyes, looking to one side, to recreate the iconic Luigi Death Stare meme from Mario Kart 8. Sure, we’ve all moved on to Mario Kart World with the arrival of Switch 2, but Luigi’s drive-by glower was a delightful breakout moment for the character—one Nintendo was glad to embrace itself back in the day—and if you’re doing a Luigi Mario Kart set like this, it’d feel only fitting to throw in a couple of extra printed tiles so you could swap the eyes out. Alas, you’ll have to make do with the pivoting head and only imagine his sheer disdain as you pass him by.
The Lego Mario Kart Luigi and Mach 8 set will go on sale April 1 for $180, and is available to preorder now.
