Star Trek is, once again, boldly going somewhere it’s never gone before. Fresh off the news that Paramount was looking to completely reboot the series for the big screen, it has hired Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley to write, produce, and direct a new Star Trek film. They’re the team that made the excellent 2023 film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, as well as the underrated 2018 film Game Night.
Deadline broke the news of the project, which is “a completely new take in the Star Trek universe and is not connected to any previous or current television series, movie, or prior movie development projects.†Plus, this version is likely to introduce completely new characters to the franchise, though it’s unclear if they’ll star or support the story.
It’s been a wild decade in the world of Star Trek. After the 2016 release of Star Trek Beyond, a proposed next sequel featuring that cast (Chris Pine, Zoe Salanda, Zachary Quinto, etc.) took many shapes and forms. Meanwhile, the franchise found new life, both forging ahead and backward, on streaming. Shows like Picard, Strange New Worlds, and many more ignited a renaissance for a franchise that got its start on TV. But, always, the question of a movie lingered.
Quentin Tarantino took a swing. Noah Hawley did the same. And recent rumors suggested we were going to get a prequel looking back at the very earliest years of Starfleet. Now, it seems, all of that is gone with Paramount’s new regime. But, if things had to go back to the drawing board, there are few teams better in Hollywood than Goldstein and Daley.
Though they’ve only directed three films so far (Vacation, Game Night, Dungeons & Dragons), each has increasingly shown an ability to blend humor, nostalgia, and a dose of geek culture into multiple genres. Their fourth film, Mayday, is out next year and will reportedly do something similar. Plus, they helped kick off the Tom Holland Spider-Man universe by co-writing Spider-Man: Homecoming.Â
So they seem like a good fit. Also, we’ll never ever get over the fact that Daley is a former actor who is best known for his starring role as Sam Weir on Freaks and Geeks. That Sam Weir got to co-direct a Dungeons & Dragons movie and is now going to make a Star Trek movie is just simply one of the coolest things in the world.
Is this the way to go with Star Trek? Are these the right guys? Let us know below.
