James Gunn Once Floated a Galaxy-Brained Pitch for a Deadpool ‘Peacemaker’ Cameo

While Peacemaker‘s season two finale is behind us, that doesn’t mean we’re done with writer-director James Gunn regaling us with some behind-the-scenes tidbits of information about his DC Studios show. The newest, and arguably most hairbrained, bit of info he’s shared involves plans to somehow get Marvel’s Ryan Reynolds to cameo in Peacemaker as Deadpool in some Amalgamation Comics-type shenanigans.

Speaking at a virtual press conference (that IGN was in attendance for), Gunn was asked about any ideas he had knocking around his mind to play with the season’s portal dimension madness. One of those ideas involved Gunn dipping back into his Marvel bag by pitching the idea for Deadpool to be behind one of Christopher Smith’s many dimensional doorways.

“Yeah, I wanted them to open the door and see Deadpool in a room,†Gunn said. “And I talked to Ryan Reynolds about it, but I think we would’ve had to go through some pretty big hoops to do that! He wanted to do it.â€

While Marvel and DC Studios in the movies are a “never shall the two meet†kind of competitive affair, the comic book rivals have had their few instances of crossover events.

One of these is the Amalgamation comic book run, along with a new slew of one-shot crossover comics. One will see Spider-Man and Superman team up, and another sees Deadpool and Batman try their damndest to get along. Given the recent fanfare of how Batman, a character Marvel has made overt references to across its cinematic universe (especially in Deadpool), Gunn’s galaxy-brained idea to double-dip into crossovers with a cheeky cameo of Deadpool in Peacemaker would’ve been pretty on brand.

Reflecting on the situation, Gunn later joked that the cameo that never happened would have been so significant that it would have overshadowed all discussions about the show and whatever intriguing future storylines he was cooking for DC Studios.

“That’s all anybody’s going to talk about now,†Gunn said. “Is fucking Deadpool in the other room? I should have never said it!â€

While we appreciate his boldness in trying to pitch something that would otherwise be a mutual Hail Mary from Marvel and DC Studios, should superhero fatigue conversations rear their head again, it’s probably for the best that this idea never came to light. All the headlines about which Marvel star on set said some innocuous thing about Avengers: Doomsday is already annoying to its actors. Adding a Deadpool x Peacemaker cameo only would’ve created another headache for all parties involved.
