News that Disney decided against making a Ben Solo Star Wars movie directed by Steven Soderbergh hit the fandom like a punch in the gut this week but, as Yoda once said, “There is another.â€
A new report from The InSneider says that in addition to Soderbergh, none other than David Fincher “had conversations with Lucasfilm about directing a movie after Episode IX,†though Sneider “promised not to reveal the details of his pitch or which Episode IX character it would’ve followed.†io9 reached out to Lucasfilm for comment or clarification but had not heard back as of publication. We’ll update this story if, or when, we do.
Of course, Fincher is not a stranger to Star Wars. Before he was the director of Fight Club, Zodiac, The Social Network, and many others, one of Fincher’s first jobs was at Industrial Light and Magic, working on films like Return of the Jedi and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. His name was also in the mix throughout the years during the prequels and even the sequels, though nothing materialized.
“Fincher was still interested in Star Wars after Episode IX,†Sneider’s report continues. “And had an interesting idea for a follow-up, but at the end of the day, for all the concessions Fincher was willing to make ahead of production—namely with regard to budget—he ultimately wanted final cut, which Lucasfilm simply could not offer him, making the whole negotiation moot.â€
So it seems like while Fincher’s idea didn’t come nearly as close as Soderbergh’s, it was something that was in the ether. Much like Guillermo del Toro’s Jabba the Hutt movie, Rian Johnson’s trilogy, a David Benioff and D.B. Weiss movie, and on and on.
What Episode IX character do you think David Fincher would’ve been interested in following, though? Not Rey, we’d imagine. Maybe Finn or Poe? Zorri Bliss? Jannah? Beaumont Kin? Klaud? Let us know below.
