After promising to have the National Guard descend upon San Francisco as part of an ongoing effort to punish major Democrat-run cities, President Trump has backed down from the “surge†meant to target immigrants in the Bay Area. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said there will no longer be a “surge†of federal law enforcement that was planned for Saturday, a decision he said was the result of conversations with “friends,†including Nvidia President and CEO Jensen Huang and Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff.
“The Federal Government was preparing to ‘surge’ San Francisco, California, on Saturday, but friends of mine who live in the area called last night to ask me not to go forward with the surge in that the Mayor, Daniel Lurie, was making substantial progress,†he wrote. In his own post on X, Mayor Lurie confirmed that he communicated with Trump. “We have work to do, and we would welcome continued partnerships with the FBI, DEA, ATF, and U.S. Attorney to get drugs and drug dealers off our streets, but having the military and militarized immigration enforcement in our city will hinder our recovery,†the mayor wrote.
According to Trump, it was conversations with Huang and Benioff that resulted in the decision to call off the planned surge, which local reports had warned would target undocumented workers. “Great people like Jensen Huang, Marc Benioff, and others have called saying that the future of San Francisco is great. They want to give it a ‘shot,’†he said. That comes less than a week after Trump promised to invade the Bay Area with federal agents, claiming during an interview with Fox News that San Francisco “went wrong, it went woke.â€
Huang and Benioff have certainly had Trump’s ear. Nvidia’s president recently praised the Trump administration’s tariff regime and energy policies, claiming it would help the AI sector grow in the US. Benioff, meanwhile, has been cheerleading for Trump for the better part of a year and recently called for the administration to send the National Guard to San Francisco, before quickly backing off the position and apologizing.
While it might be those boosters of the Trump agenda that get credit for holding back the “surge,†residents of the city also appeared ready to try to turn back any unwanted federal presence. Hundreds of people descended upon an area being used by federal agents to organize immigration raids on Thursday. In response, federal authorities reportedly threw multiple flash-bang grenades into the crowd, resulting in at least one injury.
