Today is the day. Disney is bringing one of its marquee franchises back to the big screen. A highly anticipated sequel that will send the franchise in a whole new direction. The film? Predator: Badlands. But, in another universe, Disney had an even bigger film coming out today.
Way back in 2022, Marvel Studios took the stage in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con and announced an ambitious schedule for the next few years. We saw footage from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and then, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige dropped the bombshell. Marvel was making a Fantastic Four movie and two new Avengers movies, both set for release way down the line in 2025. There was Avengers: The Kang Dynasty in May 2025, and then, the big one. The one we’ve been waiting for for decades. Avengers: Secret Wars, coming on November 7, 2025.

That’s so far away! Or, it was back then, at least. Now, that’s today, and we’re still almost as far away from Secret Wars as we were in 2022. It’s currently scheduled for release on December 17, 2027. Two years from next month.
What happened? Well, a great many things. The biggest was that Marvel severed ties with Kang himself, played by Jonathan Majors. That forced a total shift in where that current storyline was going. Then, Marvel got Infinity War and Endgame directors, Joe and Anthony Russo, to return for a newly renamed Avengers: Doomsday before Secret Wars and changed the villain to Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr.
Once those changes were made, the 2025 release dates got understandably bumped to May 2026 and 2027, which, a few months later, were moved again to December 2026 and 2027. So those films are still coming. And, in the case of Avengers: Doomsday, principal photography has been completed, and a trailer is rumored to be coming later this year. Marvel just seemingly got ahead of itself back in 2022 and assumed the world would stay the same. It has not.
So, it’s going to miss its original release date by over two years. It sucks, but it happens. Hopefully, the wait will be worth it.
