Apple’s major iPadOS 26 update comes out on September 15th, offering a new windowing system that will change the way you use the tablet. The company announced the news during its iPhone 17 launch event, just a few months after launching it in beta.
The latest version of the iPad’s operating system comes with Apple’s new Liquid Glass design language that infuses transparent elements across different apps and interfaces. But the biggest change is new windowing features that allow you to resize apps and move them around your screen, as well as close, expand, or minimize them — similar to what you can do on a Mac.
There’s a new Files app, too, where you can find and manage your files stored on your device and iCloud. The iPadOS 26 upgrade also includes a tablet-friendly version of the Preview app, which you can use to view and annotate PDFs, as well as a Phone app that supports AI-powered Live Translation.
