More on Canada may consider oil and gas exports as leverage over US tariffs

More detail on the comments from Canada’s Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly indicating that that oil and gas remain an option in negotiations:

  • Canada may consider using its oil and gas exports as leverage if U.S. tariffs on Canadian imports increase
  • while Canada has pledged to impose tariffs on C$155 billion worth of U.S. imports, it has not yet suggested cutting commodity exports
  • Canada currently exports around 4 million barrels of oil per day to the U.S. (representing about 90% of its total crude exports)
