HP seemed to think there wasn’t enough “H†and “P†in its gaming product lineup. Our old friends Hewlett and Packard are now combining their entire gaming lineup—accessories, peripherals, and PCs—into one. If you were wondering what that means for their laptops, it will depend on how hard you want to push what’s possible on a laptop GPU.
Which is where the new HyperX Omen Max 16 comes into the picture. The gaming laptop is a revised version of 2025’s HP Omen Max 16, though this version is packing extra juice. Specifically, HP upgraded the 2026 model to deliver a total of up to 300W total power. That’s 50W more than the previous version, and it’s more than many other 16-inch laptops and even most 18-inch devices sporting high-end CPUs and GPUs. For example, the MSI Titan 18HX with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 GPU hits 270W total platform power. That will matter most if you opt for a version with an RTX 5090 GPU. The laptop version of that GPU taps out at 175W TGP (total graphics power). HP told Gizmodo it had also redesigned the internal cooling system to allow for more airflow. That could prove necessary considering how much juice would be flowing through the new HyperX Omen Max 16 laptop at peak.

As for CPU, consumers have the choice of going for a “next-gen Intel processor†or one of AMD’s new laptop chips, the Ryzen 7 450 or a Ryzen AI 9 HX 475. You can get the HyperX Omen Max 16 with up to 64GB of RAM, though considering the ongoing memory shortage, we suspect that could exponentially increase the price of the newly rebranded laptop.
The laptop draws from a whopping 460W GaN power brick on a version with an Intel CPU (an AMD CPU will use a 420W GaN or 330W AC power adapter, depending on the choice of chip). HP told Gizmodo it worked to condense the size of the brick to what you get from most other gaming laptops of this size. Being a gallium nitride battery will mean it’s far lighter and more compact than other laptop power bricks. Still, you’ll need strong shoulders to carry around the whole kit and caboodle in your backpack when on the go. Just like last year’s version, the 2026 Omen Max 16 sports a 2.5K OLED display with a 240Hz refresh rate.

HP is trying to push what a 16-inch gaming laptop can handle. Whether that equals better performance in a more portable package will be made clear with more time. The keyboard, which felt too squishy on the 2025 Omen Max 16, now features a 1,000Hz polling rate, meaning it’s extra responsive on the 2026 edition. We’ll see if all the extra power headroom makes for better performance, even if that means your gaming laptop will still be beholden to that proprietary power adapter.
