Maul Kinda Regrets Wanting to Be Rid of the Jedi in ‘Shadow Lord’

Though he’s done a lot in the years since The Phantom Menace, Darth Maul is best known for one thing: killing Jedi. His murder of Qui-Gon Jinn, minutes before he himself is cut in half, basically changed the fate of the galaxy. It seems, however, by the time his new show takes place, the former Sith apprentice has changed his point of view on the Jedi, at least slightly.

On April 6, everyone’s favorite split-in-half Jedi killer returns in Maul: Shadow Lord, an animated series coming to Disney+. It takes place in the years after Revenge of the Sith as the Empire begins its rise to power (but before Maul dies at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi, of course). Speaking to Star Wars Insider, the show’s star, Sam Witwer, spoke at length about the show, including the fascinating tidbit that the former Jedi hunter has, at this point, had a change of heart about the now all-but-extinct Jedi.

“He was trained to hate and destroy the Jedi without ever questioning it,†Witwer said in the interview found by the Holo Files. “Now he’s looking at the galaxy going, ‘Boy, we could sure use a Jedi Knight or two.’ At least with the Jedi, you knew where they stood. There’s something to respect there. This Empire, he sees no values there, just the naked grab for influence, power, and money. Principles are gone. And he looks at that with a certain level of distaste. He may not have agreed with the Jedi Knights, but at least they had principles. You knew who you were dealing with, and you could reason with that. There’s no reasoning with the Empire.â€

A former Sith with principles? That’s interesting. But, we guess, it does make sense considering some of the relationships he cultivates in Star Wars Rebels, as well as the fact that he becomes a crime lord, as revealed in Solo.

But will Maul find any Jedi in Maul: Shadow Lord? Will those new ideas manifest in any specific way? We’ll find out on April 6 when Maul: Shadow Lord comes to Disney+.
