Whoops. Looks like Wizards of the Coast accidentally revealed the next Secret Lair drop for Magic: The Gathering: Capcom’s Monster Hunter franchise.
We say “looks like†is because IGN reports Wizards put out a press release announcing the drop, which is due out in December. However at time of writing, the link is broken, and the Magic website contains no info or artwork. Despite that, the press release itself revealed there’ll be four drops priced at $30 each and foil editions at $40. Don’t expect any new mechanics here; all cards will be reprints of previous Magic cards with artwork inspired by the games.
Per IGN, the four drops are dubbed “The Hunt,†“The Hunters,†“The Monsters,†and “The Monsters II.†The two “Monsters†drops will include nine monsters from across the series’ history as Legendary Creatures, like Nergigante from Monster Hunter World (standing in for “Vaevictis Asmadi, the Direâ€) or Monster Hunter 4’s Gore Malaga “Razaketh, the Foulbloodedâ€). Right now, it’s unclear how the monsters will be split across the two drops.
As for “The Hunters,†each card will have different armor sets and weapons focused on the human creature subtype. A “Grand Abolisher†becomes Tigrex Armor and Bone Scythes, for example. The same is true for the “Hunt†drops, where a “Blind Obedience†card is redressed as the Malzeno from Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak.
If you’re a fan of the games, the Monster Hunter Secret Lair drop will reportedly run from December 1 at 9AM PT to December 22 at 11:59PM PT. We should expect a more official reveal soon.
