The awards season finish line is finally in sight, and while it looked like a pretty clear race up until now, Sinners might just come from behind to cross the finish line first. Since the Ryan Coogler period vampire film won io9’s best film of the year (the all-time record 16 Oscar nominations were probably important too), it’s been gaining some serious awards momentum. Michael B. Jordan just pulled an upset to take the Best Actor award from the Screen Actors Guild, while the film itself took that group’s top prize too. And now, this new video makes a very clear case that it should be winning a lot of tech awards, as well.
Among those record 16 Oscar nominations for Sinners is one for best visual effects. And though, upon first glance, Sinners might not be as obvious a visual effects film as something like Jurassic World Rebirth or Avatar: Fire and Ash, this video proves otherwise. Check it out. As long as you can get past the very awkward opening.
That Jimmy Fallon bit aside, it is a fantastic video. I loved learning about the new camera rig and technology created so that Michael B. Jordan could play both Smoke and Stack. Normally, you’d just imagine he did the performance twice, in different costumes, and effects would be used to stitch it all together. But this is so much more.
Also, the way this is edited to juxtapose the real footage used—such as the burning roof—with the final film is also great. Just that little picture-in-picture effect is very effective at getting the point across.
We’re not sure if this is enough for Sinners to beat its competition, but if the film gains momentum in some of these other categories, March 15 could be a very big night for Ryan Coogler, Michael B. Jordan, and the Sinners team.
