If you finished watching RRR and immediately thought, “I can’t wait to see what’s next,†we’ve got good news. Filmmaker SS Rajamouli‘s new film, Varanasi, now has an official release date: April 7, 2027.
Described as “a globe-trotting adventure in the vein of Indiana Jones and James Bond,†the film stars Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra-Jonas in what’s “shaping up to be the largest and most ambitious film India has ever released and 2027’s biggest film from outside of Hollywood,†according to a press release.
Audiences got an early look at the film late last year, and it revealed that the story takes place across multiple time periods and on multiple continents. In terms of sheer scope, it appears to make RRR look like an indie film. You can check that out again right here.
What’s especially exciting about Varanasi, though, is that for the first time, everyone around the world is going to see it simultaneously. RRR didn’t start playing in the United States until well after it was a massive hit in India. It opened there in March 2022 and quickly became one of the country’s highest-grossing films of all time. Several months then passed before any U.S. theaters started playing it. At first, it was on a select few screens. But the buzz grew and grew, and eventually, the film was so popular it got enough eyeballs and accolades to win an Oscar for Best Song.
Based on that excitement around Rajamouli’s work, Varanasi will open everywhere all at once. It’s pretty exciting.
If for some wild reason you have not yet watched RRR, it’s currently streaming on Netflix along with a very, very cool behind-the-scenes making-of documentary. You’ll want to watch that too because RRR is filled with so many jaw-dropping moments, you’ll be desperate to know how they came to be. And now, SS Rajamouli is trying to top himself, if that’s even possible.
No other movies are currently slated for release on April 7, 2027, so it’ll be interesting to see if anyone takes this film on.
