In the pantheon of superhero costumes, few are as recognizable or iconic as those from the 1960s Batman TV show. Though it only ran for a few years and had just one movie adaptation, reruns throughout the decades since have cemented those bright, colorful costumes in the minds of comic book fans everywhere. Last week, several of the original costumes from the show went up for auction, and, as one might expect with items so historic, they went for a lot of money.
Last week, Heritage Auctions hosted an event selling the collection of the late Dr. Stewart Berkowitz, who had quite the treasure trove. We previously covered some of the items for sale, such as multiple original Star Trek costumes (a Captain Kirk Starfleet uniform and an alternate one he wore in “Mirror, Mirror” sold for $62,500 and $52,500, respectively), but Berkowitz also had the motherlode of Batman costumes. He had Adam West’s Batman, Burt Ward’s Robin, Cesar Romero’s Joker, Yvonne Craig’s Batgirl, Julie Newmar’s Catwoman, and Burgess Meredith’s Penguin. Here’s how much each of those sold for, according to the Hollywood Reporter:
- Batman (Adam West) and Robin (Burt Ward), sold as a set: $575,000
- Joker (Cesar Romero): $212,000
- Batgirl (Yvonne Craig): $87,500
- Catwoman (Julie Newmar): $68,750
- Penguin (Burgess Meredith): $46,250
Can you believe Batgirl sold for more than Catwoman? Sure, the costume is a little brighter and more involved but it’s the freaking costume Julie Newmar wore as Catwoman. Not that almost $70,000 is a number to shrug off.
Anyway, adding up those totals, the collected costumes sold for $989,500, very close to $1 million. And all we’re thinking is, we really hope one person got all of these. That’s probably not the case, but if I’m spending like $100,000 on a costume like this, I can probably afford $1 million. And I think owning just one of these costumes would feel incomplete. Here are a few of the images from the auction house. Just imagine all these displayed together.
Oh, and as you can see above, the Batman TV show wasn’t the only iconic superhero costume of the era that Dr. Berkowitz owned. Linda Carter’s Wonder Woman costume also sold at the auction for $225,000.
