The First Trailer for ‘Avatar’ Season 2 Is All About Toph

We’ve been waiting for what feels like almost as long as Aang’s freezing for the return of the live-action The Last Airbender remake, and part of that wait being so painful is for good reason. Season two of the show is bringing us one of the animated series’ most beloved characters in the form of Toph Beifong: so it’s no surprise our first look at it really makes her the star.

Yeah, sure, we also get glimpses of Aang and the rest of the gang as they continue on their quest to train the young airbender in mastery of the other elements, as well as Zuko and Iroh’s growing bond together, but Netflix’s first trailer for season 2 puts Miya Cech’s version of Toph front and center.

Of course, aside from Toph herself narrating the trailer, we get to see a little of how the show will handle her earthbending skills, but we also get to see how the show is going to approach her blindness, taking a desaturated, thrumming effect to show her use of sound and vibrations to echolocate her surroundings.

So far, so Toph, but we also know the live-action series will make some changes to the character to make her less of the tomboy she was in the animated show, with Cech previously telling press that her Toph will play in a more feminine attitude in comparison, telling The Direct earlier this year that “I wanted to work into a very humanizing space for her because she was [originally] a cartoon.â€

Of course, the animated series wasn’t unafraid of showing off that side of Toph either—acknowledging her occasional desire to want to do feminine things was part of her growing bond with Katara—but it’ll be interesting to see just how the live-action show interprets that, as much as it’s interesting to see how she’ll fling rocks and navigate the world around her.

The live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender returns to Netflix some time in 2026.
