Earlier this week—through the medium of a charmingly retro live-action trailer—we learned that Fortnite‘s latest addition to its franchise crossover crown is none other than the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, with all six of the classic teens with attitudes hopping into the game. But now that the newest season of the shooter is upon us, we’ve got a better look at what’s coming, and while Power Rangers fans will perhaps grouse at another round of Mighty Morphin’ era nostalgia, there’s still a lot to love here.
Owners of both the standard and premium passes for the season, “Shock N’ Awesome†(which sees Fortnite‘s ever-evolving Island setting invaded by swarms of alien bugs), will be able to unlock Tommy Oliver in both his Green Ranger and White Ranger outfits on the final two pages of the pass. Both Tommys will get some fun thematic accessories to unlock beyond the skins, like an emote recreating the Green Ranger’s dagger song to summon the Dragonzord, or the White Ranger getting the Tiger Megazord as a glider accessory. Starting from September 16, battle pass owners will also be able to perform in-game quests to unlock the Dino Megazord as a skin, alongside its own set of related accessories.
Although fans will have to wait until tomorrow, August 8, to be able to purchase the new Power Rangers bundle in Fortnite‘s cosmetics store—which will contain skins for the Red, Pink, Blue, Yellow, and Black Rangers, alongside associated accessories and emotes—we were already given a look at the skins in Epic’s blog post announcing the first details about the new season.

Of course, they’re largely faithful to the classic designs of the original rangers; there are some subtle modernizations to the suits, like modified collars and extra texturing around the gauntlets, boots, and the diamond patterns across each ranger’s chest to make them feel less like printed-on patterns. There’s even some ribbing running down the sides of the suits to make them look like actual costumes rather than just skintight suits, without running too far beyond the classic spandex look. Glance, and they look like the same old Power Rangers you’ve been seeing dramatically somersault away from massive pyrotechnic explosions for over 30 years, but look close enough and you can appreciate what Fortnite‘s team has done to their overall designs.

Even with the main rangers not quite in-game yet, the arrival of the new season today means that people scurrying around the files of the new update have been able to see just what else is coming alongside the new skins. The Power Rangers will each receive their own pickaxe and backbling accessories, in the form of their respective power weapons and power coins, as well as a special weapon skin that matches the suit design of whichever ranger outfit is currently equipped.

Likewise, the release will include a bevy of Mighty Morphin’-themed emotes. The “Go Go Power Rangers†and “It’s Morphin’ Time†emotes both feature custom changes based on whichever ranger skin a player has equipped—the first changing the battle pose they strike, the second seeing them use their power morpher and having their respective power coin float above them, and of course both play the iconic Power Rangers theme song to boot. Another emote lets players summon a mini-Zordon so he can say his trademark “May the power protect you!â€
But perhaps the most fun emote, and definitely the silliest, is a very specific reference. “Uncontrollable Dance†has players clutch their heads in confusion and then groove out to a series of absurd dance moves… moves lifted right out of the season 3 episode “The Sound of Dischordiaâ€, which featured the titular villainess mind-controlling the rangers through her siren song, compelling them to bust a move (and almost hand over their power coins to her).
Again, for all the reasonable ire of Power Rangers‘ laser focus on the original team at the expense of over 30 years’ worth of other rangers, you can’t deny that a lot of love has gone into Epic’s approach to Power Rangers. Perhaps it’ll make the wait for the franchise’s second Disney era a little less tiresome if you can get Tommy Oliver to hit the griddy on Godzilla or the Fantastic Four.
