If you’re having a generally good day today, one without bloody people screaming at the top of their lungs, loved ones creepily staring at you for no reason, or laughing so performatively it’s embarrassing, you might want to be careful with the new trailer for Obsession. It’s got all of that in it and more, making it very creepy and uncomfortable. And we wouldn’t want to ruin a good thing.
Which, interestingly enough, is almost exactly the plot of the new film, written and directed by Curry Barker. Bear (Michael Johnston) is not-so-secretly in love with his good friend Nikki (Inde Navarrette). And they’re really good friends. It’s the kind of friendship that could probably survive Bear being honest about his feelings. But, instead of that, he finds a gag gift called a “One Wish Willow” and offhandedly wishes that Nikki would love him more than anything in the world. What’s the worst that can happen? Believe the brief quote from a certain website you’re currently reading, saying that Obsession is “terrifying.” Because it absolutely is. Barker finds true horror in this situation, which gets pushed well beyond even the insanity you see in this trailer. And while the trailer does tease just how bad this wish goes for Bear and Nikki, I’d still say it’s probably only 35% of the madness. It goes much, much, much harder.
Obsession played the festival circuit last year, which is when we reviewed it, and got quickly scooped up by Focus Features, which set it for a summer release. We truly do think that it’s one of those unique, terrifying, disgusting horror movies that’s destined for greatness. So if that trailer didn’t ruin your day, we’d suggest making a movie date for about two months from now.
Obsession opens May 15.
