A few years ago, Master Replicas caused a ripple across the Star Trek quadrant of the internet when it announced it was bringing back the legendary Bodum teacups made famous by Captain Picard in The Next Generation, almost a decade after it had left store shelves seemingly for good. While we can certainly ding Jean-Luc for his taste in tea, he and the Enterprise-D replicator had great tastes in drinkware—except he’s now going to be one-upped by both the superior Trek hot drink of choice and the superior mug.
That’s right, the blue, conical mug seen regularly on Deep Space Nine. Used across the titular space station’s promenade, these far more sci-fi-looking mugs were often used to drink Klingon raktajino, Qo’noS’ answer to coffee, and were, just like the Bodum cups, actually a real-world design from Feltman Langer. Langer let the trademark on the no-slip styled mugs expire in the late ’90s, making them difficult to find, and especially so in the pale blue that became synonymous with Deep Space Nine, a color painted onto the mugs by the show’s art department.
Unlike the Bodum cup’s lengthy hiatus, you’ve been able to get similar enough fixes for a while now—a different design used for drinks in Quark’s bar, for example, was from Highwave and continues to be sold to this day, and last year, PC accessory builder CherryTree started selling a series of unlicensed versions of the mug inspired by the show. But now Master Replicas has announced preorders for an official Star Trek series of the mugs in a variety of colorways.
You’ll be able to get the classic raktajino mug in Replimat blue, as well as a version in the same color but with the logo of Quark’s bar stamped on the side. Lastly, if you don’t care for in-universe accuracy when reaching for a cup of joe in the morning, Klingon or otherwise, there’s a black variant that has the Deep Space Nine logo on it instead.
The three official raktajino mugs are available to order now, at $25 apiece. Now that we’ve successfully resolved 30+ year-old drinkware merchandising issues, can we get on to someone licensing a set of those warp core-print pajamas Chancellor Ake wore on Starfleet Academy earlier this season?
